style=\"text-align: center;\">The Story of the Horse Brass Pub<\/h3>\n<p>It was a dark and stormy autumn afternoon in 1976 when Don Younger sat with a friend in an obscure South East Portland tavern waiting for his car to be fixed.\u00a0 Don was a devout Blitz drinker at the time and this tavern with 6 taps (2 wits, Lowenbrau, Whatney\u2019s Red Barrel, Guinness and Blitz) was the closest place to while away the afternoon.\u00a0 Day turned to night and while the details of that evening remain vague, we do know that Don met with owners Jay and Jay.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning Don met with his brother and business partner Bill and invited him to have a drink.\u00a0 Bill knew something was up.\u00a0 When they got to the tavern Don began to show him around, then Don pointed to the top of a wooden keg hanging on the wall that read \u201cWilliam Younger\u2019s Tartan Bitter\u201d and said, I bought this for you but I didn\u2019t know how to wrap it and since it doesn\u2019t come off the wall we got the whole kit and caboodle\u201d.\u00a0 Bill was not happy.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t have any money.\u00a0 (Truth be told, Don saw the bill of sale when he woke up and had no idea how it happened.)<\/p>\n<p>Together they scrounged up the money and on November 1, 1976 the two Younger brothers who had never stepped foot in England and had no idea what a pub was became the proud owners of what would soon become the world famous Horse Brass Pub.<\/p>\n<p>The early years were spent adding more taps, imports and domestic beer alike.\u00a0 Recent UK transplants Bette and Brian Dutch, the first two employees of the Pub helped develop many of the homemade specialties still on the menu today; bangers, Scotch eggs, sausage rolls, ploughman\u2019s lunch, pies and pasties.\u00a0 Our world famous Halibut Fish and Chips are award winning (Willamette Week \u2013 Best Fish and Chips) and our food has been featured on Food Channel\u2019s \u201cThe Secret Life of Pub Grub\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A strong following of locals and ex-pats began to grow.\u00a0 Professional soccer was taking Portland by storm and the Horse Brass became their haven as well.\u00a0 A crowd was developing with a thirst for all things British; sport, food and drink.\u00a0 \u201cSomething just clicked.\u00a0 In fact, when I started out I only had a fantasy of what an English pub should be.\u00a0 Then I decided to make it the best pub there is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next step would be a fact finding mission to England with many more to follow.\u00a0 On one of these trips Don was introduced to John Young, owner of Young\u2019s Brewery.\u00a0 During another tour of British pubs, Don met Terry and Debbie, proprietors of Young\u2019s tied house, the Prince of Wales a pub in South London.\u00a0 A special bond was formed and the Prince of Wales became sister pub.\u00a0 Other trips ensued. Don organized a tans-Atlantic dart tournament \u2013 Brits vs. Yanks at the Prince of Wales.\u00a0 Friends, locals and regulars from both pubs have garnered many frequent flier miles travelling to their adopted local across the sea.<\/p>\n<p>The 80\u2019s heralded the budding of the microbrew phenomena.\u00a0 The Horse Brass was the perfect outlet to test and taste beer styles that had been absent since prohibition.\u00a0 \u201cI kind of miss the good old days when the Widmer brothers and all the other brewers were hoping to just brew good beer and maybe make a living at it\u201d Don said \u201cwhen breweries were being put together out of old dairy equipment and dreams.\u201d\u00a0 This of course meant adding more taps.<\/p>\n<p>In 1989, Don and then General Manager Mel Hickman were asked by Jack Joyce to do some consulting for his newly created company Rogue Ales.\u00a0 To honor the Horse Brass, Rogue decided to brew a house beer in Don\u2019s favorite style-a Special Bitter.\u00a0 The still unnamed beer was on its way to Portland, when Don received devastating news \u2013 the unfortunate and untimely death of his brother Bill.\u00a0 Don asked that the beer be named in honor of his brother Bill.\u00a0 William Younger\u2019s Special Bitter is closest thing to a house beer we pour.\u00a0 You can always ask for a pint of \u201cYSB\u201d or if you prefer cask conditioned \u201cBilly\u201d \u2013 and when you do, drink a toast to the Caveman.<\/p>\n<p>In 1997, following the death of Princess Diana, John Young renamed the Horse Brass\u2019 sister pub the Princess of Wales.\u00a0 Longtime regular, employee and artist James Macko was commissioned by the Young\u2019s family to paint a portrait of Diana and attend the renaming ceremonies.\u00a0 The Horse Brass held a fund raiser for this event with the proceeds going to Diana\u2019s favorite charities. Ten ambassadors of the Horse Brass travelled to London to present the portrait and attend this historical event.\u00a0 The portrait of Princess Diana hung in the Princess of Wales until it was recently sold by Young\u2019s when it travelled back across the pond where it now permanently resides above one of our \u201cregulars\u201d tables.<\/p>\n<p>The Horse Brass celebrated its 30 year anniversary November 2006.\u00a0 A ten day celebration featuring craft beers from across the land specifically brewed for the Horse Brass.\u00a0 Food, entertainment and fun for ten days straight, it almost killed us.\u00a0 Young and old and everyone in between from near and far graced our halls.\u00a0 The curious, the all knowing, all beer fans and friends the minute they walked in the door.\u00a0 Everyone joined into at least one rousing round of the \u201cBallad of the Horse Brass\u201d written many years ago by our friend Tom May.<\/p>\n<p>The secret was out-not just by word of mouth, by National Press.\u00a0 The pub recently has been featured in the New York Times, Esquire Magazine, The Food Channel, Celebrator, All About Beer, The Oregonian to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, All beer is the result of sugar extraction from grain. This sweet liquid (wort) is boiled with hops, and sometimes spices, which are used to add bitterness and aroma. The liquid is then fermented with a special yeast strain to convert the sugars to alcohol (by-product) and carbon dioxide (product).\u00a0 Almost all beer falls into two main categories: lagers and ales.<\/p>\n<h4>Lagers<\/h4>\n<p>Bottom fermenting yeast is used in the fermentation process. Lagers ferment at a colder temperature than ales and generally take weeks longer to ferment out than ales. Characteristically lagers are typically clearer, cleaner and crisper tasting than ales and are meant to be drunk at a colder temperature. (40-50 degrees Fahrenheit) Styles include Pilsners,\u00a0 Helles, Dunkels, Bocks, Schwarzbiers and Oktoberfests- just to name a few.<\/p>\n<h4>Pilsner<\/h4>\n<p>Originally from the town of Plzen in the Czech Republic.\u00a0 Straw colored with moderate hop aromas and a good light malt balance.<\/p>\n<h4>Helles<\/h4>\n<p>Golden in color, this lager is medium bodied with a toasted malt flavor with a low hop aroma and flavor.<\/p>\n<h4>Dunkel<\/h4>\n<p>Generally dark brown in color with roasted malt, baked bread and chocolate flavors.<\/p>\n<h4>Bock<\/h4>\n<p>Originally from the German town of Einbeck.\u00a0 Generally high in alcohol with sweet malt aroma and flavor.<\/p>\n<h4>Oktoberfest<\/h4>\n<p>Traditionally this style was brewed in Germany in September. Amber to mahogany in color this style is traditional really malty in flavor with little hop presence.<\/p>\n<h4>Ales<\/h4>\n<p>Top fermenting yeast is used in the fermentation process. Ales ferment at a warmer temperature than lagers and tend to ferment in just a couple of days as opposed to weeks. Characteristically ales are more complex, fuller bodied and hazier than lagers and are meant to be drunk at a slightly warmer temperature. (50-60 degrees Fahrenheit)\u00a0 .\u2026.Styles include Pale Ales, IPAs, Blonde or Golden Ales, Bitters, Wheat Beers, Saison, Scottish Ales, Belgians, Porters, and Stouts- just to name a few.<\/p>\n<h4>Pale Ale<\/h4>\n<p>A lower alcohol version of the IPA brewed for the British public. Pale Ales are generally medium bodied with a nice malt and hop balance with a lot of hop aroma and flavor.<\/p>\n<h4>IPA (India Pale Ale)<\/h4>\n<p>Originally brewed stronger and hoppier than other styles to survive the boat ride from Britain to India. Intensely hoppy and bitter.<\/p>\n<h4>Blonde or Golden Ale<\/h4>\n<p>Traditionally brewed with pale malt this beer is golden in color with a lighter body and good hop characteristics.<\/p>\n<h4>Bitter<\/h4>\n<p>Heavy handed hoppy beer that is light bodied with varying degrees of alcohol content.<\/p>\n<h4>Wheat Beer<\/h4>\n<p>Malted barley and wheat are used in the brewing process to create a crisp, spicy and light bodied ale.<\/p>\n<h4>Scottish Ale<\/h4>\n<p>Less hop and more big malt flavors are present with this style. Full-bodied and sweet with a roasty malted flavor.<\/p>\n<h4>Porter<\/h4>\n<p>A little lighter in body and color than a stout. Porters are light bodied dark ales with roasted coffee and toffee flavors.<\/p>\n<h4>Stout<\/h4>\n<p>Dark brown to black in color with a medium to full-bodied mouth feel. Lightly hopped with roasted coffee and chocolate flavors.<\/p>\n<h4>Cask-conditioned Beer<\/h4>\n<p>Cask beer is beer that is carbonated, or \u201cconditioned\u201d in the cask or keg.\u00a0 This is done by adding a small amount of fermenting gyle, or new beer, to a keg of still beer. Cask beer is pulled by a hand pump-a device called a beer engine-that draws the beer from the keg into the pint glass- as opposed to other draught beer that is pushed from the keg to the glass by CO2 or a blended beer gas. Cask conditioned beer is not carbonated as other draught beers are. In the UK, cask ale is served at cellar temperature 52-54 degrees Fahrenheit . It is served a little warmer than our other beers to help let the best flavors of the ale come out.<\/p>\n<h4>Beer Fun Facts<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cA quart of ale is a dish for a king.\u201d-Shakespeare<\/p>\n<p>The oldest known written recipe is for beer.<\/p>\n<p>The Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, not because it was their intended destination (they were on course to sail well south), but they settled on the destination up north simply because they ran out of beer.<\/p>\n<p>FDR was elected President in 1932 because of his platform promise to end Prohibition.<\/p>\n<p>In England, Ale used to be served only in Pints and Quarts. When the patrons became unruly, the publican would settle the rowdy patrons down by telling them to \u201cmind their Pints &amp; Quarts.\u201d That is where the saying \u201cmind your P\u2019s &amp; Q\u2019s\u201d originated.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago in the UK, drinking vessels had a whistle baked into the rim of the glass.
