Pub Pays Tribute to Princess Diana
The death of Princess Diana still echoes wherever the sun sets on the British Empire -- and even in Portland. Diana's memory will be recalled Sunday at the Horse Brass Pub with a daylong celebration as British bangers and mash and bubble and squeak.
The occasion is the renaming of the Horse Brass' sister pub in Wimbleton from the Prince of Wales to the Princess of Wales.
The new name saved the London tavern from demolition, and it has a wry twist, as the Royal Family deleted that title when Diana and Charles divorced.
The celebration begins with a full English breakfast -- kippers and bacon and other artery-teasers -- from 10:00 a.m. until noon. The Tea Room brews up between 1:00-5:00 p.m. There's a pub quiz at 3:00 p.m. and Boddington's beer will be introduced on draught at 4:00 p.m.
From 4:00-7:00 p.m., prime rib and Yorkshire pudding should help stretch stomachs for Thanksgiving. Music follows from Beatles cover band the Hard Days Knights, and Old Triangle at 8:00 p.m. The highlight will be the 6:00 p.m. unveiling of a portrait of Diana by James Macko -- which is headed for the renamed pub in England. To help pay for this, the pub is selling $10.00 raffle tickets to be drawn at 6:15 p.m. The lucky winner will get to sample the Princess of Wales hospitality firsthand around December 5 -- with two round trip tickets to England.
